What entity SEO is, and why it isn’t keywords

For twenty years, SEO was about words. Match the keyword, earn the link, climb the ranking.

Entity SEO is about things. A thing has a name, a set of facts, and links to other things. Search engines store things in a graph, not a keyword list.

Google calls its version the Knowledge Graph. The AI models keep their own internal read on which brands are real. Either way, every engine sorts the world into two buckets: companies it can identify, and text it can’t place. Your brand sits in one of them.

Keywords still rank pages. But a page ranks better when the engine trusts the company behind it, and an AI engine only names a source it can name with confidence. So the question changes. It stops being which keywords you chase. It becomes whether the engine knows who you are. That is the part of how AEO works that entity SEO owns.

Recognition comes before the citation

Most people get the order backwards. They publish more, hoping volume earns citations. It doesn’t. An engine won’t name a brand it can’t verify, no matter how good the post is.

Build your entity home

Every entity needs a home. One source the engines treat as the truth about you.

That home is your own website. Your homepage and about page especially, marked up so a machine can read the facts instead of guessing them.

Structured data does the talking. Organization schema for the company. Person schema for the founder and key people. Both carry a stable @id, so the engine has one fixed handle for you across every page. Name, logo, founding date, location, the people behind it, all written in code the engine reads in one pass. The Organization and Person schema is the full build. The short version: state your facts once, in code, and never contradict them anywhere else.

The stable @id matters more than it looks. Without it, the engine sees ten pages by ten unknown authors. With it, it sees ten pages by one company it already knows. One handle. One entity. Every page pointing back to it.

sameAs and Wikidata: one brand, one identity

Schema tells the engine who you say you are. The sameAs property proves it.

sameAs is a list of links from your entity out to the places that already describe you. Your LinkedIn. Crunchbase. X. G2. Your Google Business Profile. Wikipedia and Wikidata. It says, in a language the engine trusts, that the company on this page is the company on all of those.

Wikidata is the one to do first. It’s an open database of entities, each with a permanent ID, and it feeds Google’s Knowledge Graph. A clean entry does two jobs. It separates you from every other brand with a name like yours. And it gives the engines a trusted anchor to hang your sameAs links on.

You don’t need Wikipedia to start. Chasing it early is a waste, because the bar for who qualifies is high. Wikidata, Organization schema, and a tidy set of profiles cover most of the ground. Build the web of links, point every one back to your entity home, and keep the facts identical across all of it.

Say the same thing everywhere you show up

Models trust a story that holds up in more than one place.

Your name, your category, your location, your founder, your one-line pitch. All of it should read the same on your site, your LinkedIn, your Crunchbase, your Google profile, and every directory that lists you.

This is dull work. It’s also where most brands leak trust. An old address on a directory. A former founder on a review site. Three different descriptions of what you do. Each mismatch gives the engine a reason to doubt you, and doubt sends the answer to someone else.

So go find every profile with your name on it and make them agree. Then earn mentions on the sites the engines already read in your field. When other sites describe you the same way you describe yourself, the model stops doubting you.

Own your topics, not just your name

Recognition gets you in the room. Depth gets you cited.

The engines don’t only store what your brand is. They store what it’s about. They build that from the subjects you cover well and the company your content keeps.

Publish scattered posts on ten unrelated topics and the engine can’t tie you to any of them. Pick the few subjects you want your name attached to and cover them properly. Do it long enough and your brand and those topics start showing up together, until the model files you under them. That’s what it means to build topical authority. It’s the step between being a company the engine recognizes and being the one it recommends.

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini work out who you are

ChatGPT starts with what it learned in training, then searches the live web when it’s unsure. It leans toward brands that show up consistently across the sources it pulls, so steady presence beats one perfect page. Perplexity crawls in real time and shows its sources on every answer. Freshness matters here. A stale profile or a thin entity gets passed over for something the crawler can read cleanly right now.

This is where generative engine optimization and classic search overlap the most. Strong entity signals feed the blue links and the answer sitting on top of them.

The mistakes that keep brands invisible

Most entity problems are self-inflicted. The same few turn up in every audit.

Blocked crawlers. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot are shut out in your robots.txt, none of this reaches the engines. Check that first. Perfect schema on a blocked site earns nothing.

Wikipedia first. It feels like the prize. The bar turns most brands away, and the hours are better spent on Wikidata and the profiles you own.

None of these are hard. They’re boring. Boring is the work your competitors skip, which is why fixing it moves you past them.

How to tell it’s working

Entity work is slow, so measure the right signal or you’ll quit before it pays.

Watch for a knowledge panel. When Google gives you one, it has started treating you as an entity, not just a page that ranks. That’s the first proof the signals are landing.

Then track AI citations. Which engines name you, for which buyer questions, and whether that turns into leads. That’s the number that pays, and it builds slowly as the engines recrawl and re-read who you are.

Rankings still move. For entity work, they’re a side effect, not the scoreboard.
