Most AEO playbooks treat every AI engine the same. Claude is the one where that assumption costs you the most. Anthropic’s model is trained to prefer verifiable credibility and to distrust promotional language, so the brands it cites are rarely the ones with the most keyword-optimized pages. They are the ones with clear entity signals, named expertise, primary data, and a presence on sources the model already trusts.

How Claude retrieves and cites
Claude cites through two pathways.
Live web search (when enabled): For queries that benefit from current information, such as vendor comparisons, pricing, and recent updates, Claude runs a web search and cites relevant pages. The retrieval provider behind this has been widely reported to be Brave’s Search API, though Anthropic has not officially confirmed a single, permanent provider, and it can change. The strategic response is not to chase an unconfirmed backend. It is to optimize for the signals that hold across any retrieval layer: crawlability, entity clarity, and credible, well-structured content.
Training corpus (for knowledge questions): For stable questions with durable answers, Claude draws on its training data. Content that met quality and credibility signals during training can be cited without a live search step.
The practical takeaway: you cannot engineer a search index you cannot verify. You can control whether Claude’s crawler reaches you, whether your entity is unambiguous, and whether your content is credible and extractable. That is where the leverage is.
Step 1: Make sure ClaudeBot can reach your content
Before anything else, confirm Anthropic’s crawler can read your pages. AI crawlers fetch the raw HTML your server returns. They do not click, scroll, or wait for JavaScript. Content behind a tab, an accordion, a “load more” button, or a client-side render can be invisible to them even when it looks fine in a browser.
Allow the AI crawlers explicitly in robots.txt:

Many sites block non-major-search-engine bots by default through security plugins or Cloudflare rules. Use the robots.txt checker to confirm exactly which bots your site allows today. ClaudeBot access is binary: if it is blocked, no other optimization matters.
Step 2: Make your entity unambiguous
Claude’s value to a user depends on knowing what a brand is, what it does, and what category it belongs to. Brands with weak entity signals either do not appear in Claude responses or appear with hedged language (“I believe” rather than a direct statement).

The description needs to be precise enough to separate you from every other brand in your category. “We help companies grow” is not distinguishing. “Customer success automation for B2B teams with 50 to 500 seats” is.
Then keep the naming identical everywhere. If your schema says “Acme AI,” your LinkedIn says “Acme AI Inc.,” and your GitHub says “acme-ai-hq,” the entity model may treat these as separate, low-confidence entities. Consistent naming across your schema, LinkedIn, and any press mentions strengthens the connection the model can trust.
Step 3: Write answer-first, evidence-led content
This is the durable lever, and it predates every AI engine. The content that gets extracted is the content that answers a clear question directly, early, and with specifics.
Answer in sentence one. The direct response to the question a page targets must appear before any context or background. AI pulls from the start of a content block when constructing a citation.
Specific data over general claims. “Our median client sees first citations within 60 days” is citable. “Our clients see great results” is not. Attach a number to a claim wherever you honestly can.
Question-match headings. An H2 phrased as the question a buyer actually asks (“How long does AEO take?”) gives the model a precise extraction anchor. “Our Process” does not.
Neutral, non-promotional tone. Claude’s training biases against salesy language. The same fact stated plainly is more citable than the same fact wrapped in marketing. Write like a source, not a brochure.
A note on schema, because it gets oversold: mark this content up with FAQPage and Organization structured data, but understand what it does. Structured data helps machines parse your page unambiguously. It is not a citation lever, and it is not a Google rich-result lever anymore either. It is low-cost plumbing worth keeping, not the thing that does the work. Your content and your credibility do the work.
This is the same content that earns topical authority in traditional search. One system, structured well, serves both.
Step 4: Earn off-site authority
This is the part most on-site playbooks skip, and it is where the majority of citation weight actually sits. AI engines lean heavily on what authoritative third parties say about you, not just what you say about yourself. The same fact appearing consistently across independent, trusted sources is far stronger than the same fact on your own domain alone.
Practical moves, in order of leverage:
- Publish original data. A benchmark, survey, or metric from your own work that exists nowhere else makes you a primary source. Primary sources get cited at a much higher rate than pages that aggregate other people’s numbers. This is the highest-leverage asset you can build.
- Earn mentions on sources the model already trusts. Find the third-party pages and threads AI repeatedly cites in your category, and get named in them through genuinely useful contributions or direct outreach to the author.
- Keep your facts consistent across profiles. Reviews, directories, and professional profiles that state the same entity facts reinforce the model’s confidence.
- Attribute to named experts. A claim tied to a real person with relevant, verifiable expertise carries an E-E-A-T signal that anonymous copy does not.

Measuring Claude citation performance
No native analytics exist for Claude citations. Two indirect signals are worth tracking:
Monthly manual sampling. Ask Claude your 20 most important buyer queries, with and without search enabled. Document which responses cite your domain and what text is extracted. Repeat monthly. Shifts in citation frequency, and in the queries you appear for, show whether the entity, content, and authority work is landing.
Branded search growth. Buyers who meet your brand inside a Claude answer frequently search your brand name afterward. Unexplained growth in branded impressions in Google Search Console is one of the more reliable secondary indicators that AI citations are increasing across engines.
